Politics and Brexit its time to talk
It’s time to talk about something that has been dividing the nation for months Brexit. This decision which was made by the public will spark one of the biggest political changes in the world in the last half-century. Before I go forward let me make this clear this isn’t an anti-Brexit post or a pro-Brexit post if anything it’s a pro-democracy post so please bear with.
This decision by the nation is massive and daunting in scope and size, its implications are unknown and the plan to move forward is little more than conjecture. The reason I am writing this post is that there has been a near endless supply of issues, misinformation, insults and blame after the universally surprising result.
Firstly, there is the stereotype that only the elderly voted to leave, while it is true statistically that the older generations did vote more in favour with Brexit it could not have been a leave result without the middle and younger aged voters, people like myself.
Yes, I a 19-year-old student, demographically speaking the least likely to vote leave did do just that and this brings to my second point the reasoning for why people voted the way they did. We can all agree the campaigns on both sides were complete shit shows that both lied and exaggerated and now it's sadly common for people to shout that leavers voted since they are racists afraid of immigration and remainers voted because of scaremongering this is rubbish.
There were many valid reasons to vote, either way, the EU has been economically secure for years it provided security and the UK had more international power as a leading EU member to name a couple. For leavers, there was the fact the EU was the only economy not to grow from 2005-2015 many of the members didn’t care for its laws and the UK seemed to be resented by many nations and despite the EU promoting equality in migration its free movement of people is inherently discriminatory towards non-EU peoples.
The thing that really annoyed me and still annoys me is the insults in my home county Cornwall being leave was common since its fishing industry was badly affected by other member nations not sticking to the rules set by the EU, but the moment I left Cornwall or turned on the TV for a Victoria live debate all I saw was insults people saying I was xenophobic and racist for not liking the bureaucracy of the EU now I still see people calling leave voters dregs and idiots because we had a different point of view.
For myself the decision was hard it wasn't anything to do with immigration, behind the NHS and women’s vote, immigration is one of the best things to happen to the UK hands down there were several reasons for voting out the same for voting in and when I looked for answers from the two campaigns I was met with scaremongering and insults when I looked to "experts" all I found was I don't know and when I read and watched the media all I saw were lies in the midst of all that I made the decision I thought was best and no one can fault me for that
This brings me to the final point blame. Some people are still looking for someone to blame and no one can blame me or any leave voter for having a differing opinion there is a few places to look at the 13 million people who didn’t vote, the media and both campaigns. But does it really matter? It was a democratic decision, by all means, fight the decision and if you ask and treat me with respect ill willingly debate you on every point to Brexit who knows I was on the fence you may even make me switch sides.
The point is that Brexit has shown an issue with British politics. it is so common to hear you hear “urgh please not politics”. People only seem to accept democracy when it goes their way when it matches their views, people don’t debate anymore and people aren’t open to new ideas but that’s how it should be people should debate since that is how new ideas are created.
British politics is completely stagnant and broken there are no new ideas no tolerance for them, look at Labour a completely disillusioned party, a democratic socialist party that was thrown into chaos when a democratic socialist took over, the liberal democrats think shouting we’ll ban Brexit will change anything (especially since article 50 has all but been triggered and we are still 3 years from an election) and the Scottish first minister is so disillusioned she never focuses on what her country has and how lucky her country and people are with free education, prescriptions, parking and the most power of any devolved government.
The government knows this atmosphere exists which is one reason why they act so covertly taking money away from local authorities to choke the NHS if they were to come out and say we don’t like the NHS let’s get rid of it I'd respect it because I could debate it except this toxic environment allows the government to largely act unopposed since the opposition is too busy having heart attacks amongst themselves over new ideas.
