What does Brexit mean for students?
So on Thursday the 23rd of June the British people voted to leave the European union and after speaking to several of my friends many were concerned with what happens now.
So what does that actually mean for university students in the UK and students who intend to study in the UK? Well, this question has to be answered in stages. First, we need to understand what the European Union provides higher education students in the UK, following this I will explain the short term and long term effects for UK based HE students.
So what does the EU do for UK university students? Well, this may be harder to gauge than you might think as the impact of the EU can vary greatly from institution to institution from faculty to faculty to course, to course, to student to student even. In simple terms, many things, for one the freedom of movement allows for students to easily study in other EU countries at the same cost as local students. also, there are considerable grants and funding options for postgraduate and faculty projects as well for the institutions as well.
Are We going to loose these services? Short term no nothing will change considering article 50 of the Lisbon treaty will not be triggered until at least September after the conservative leadership election and the "Statement on higher education and research following the EU referendum" on GOV.UK states nothing is really going to change in terms of funding and fees for EU students for years (for the duration of most current students courses) and should stay the same for 2017 starters at the moment.
Unfortunately, we simply don't know about the long term issues it all depends on the negotiations of the UK's exit from the EU. Universities may lose funding and competition for postgraduate grants and project funding may get more competitive. The bright side is that the EUA, which supports 850 universities, said "The Europe of universities will not be divided".
